DEDICATION.

To the Essex Musical Association, founded in 1797,

The following Work is inscribed : with an ardent wish that it may contribute, in
some small degree, towards furthering the object of the Society ; the ameliorating and
refining the Taste for Music in this Country ; and that it may have a tendency to in-
crease innocent amusement, as well as to exalt the feelings in public devotion, by their
humble servant. The AUTHOR,

The Trill, the notes of Tranfition, and the Appogiatura, are con-
ceived to be more eaiily taught by example than precept by any
teacher, and therefore are not explained.

Of Time.

There are three kinds of Time, viz. Common, Treble & Compound.

Common Time has four Marks or Modes,

4th Mod:.

:ilE=ligi^

1,2.

l.C.

1, 2.

The firft mode has one Semibreve, or other notes and refts equi*-
\ alent, in a bar ; the bar is performed in four feconds, two with the
hand down and two with it up.

The fecond mode contains the fame notes in a bar ; the time is to
be meafured in the fame manner, but is one quarter falter.

The third mode alfo contains the fame notes in a bar, but is per-
formed two feconds in a bar, one with the hand down and one with
it up.

The fourth mode has only one minim in a bar, or other notes equ:d
thereto, performed one fourth part fatter than the third mode, and
beat in die fame manner.

Treble Time

— has three Marks or Modes, viz. — *
\Ji Mode,

The firft mode has three minims in a bar, each minim founded a '
fecond of time ; the two firft to be fung with the hand down, and the

laft with it up. > ...

The fecond mode has three crotchets in a bar ; the time is to be
meafured in the fame manner, but one quarter fafter than the fore-
going mode.

The third' mode has three quavers in a bar, the time is to be mea-
fured with the hand like both the foregoing, but one quarter fafter
than the fecond mode.

Compound Time

— has two Marks -or Modes, viz;— r-

m&

z.

2<sT Mode.

2.

2.

The firft mode contains fix crotchets in a bar ; three of which are
to be founded with the hand down and three mih it up, ijn the time
cf two feconds.

Vll

The fecond mode has fix quavers in a bar, which are to be divided
and fung in the fame manner as the crotchets in the foregoing mode,
only a quarter fafter.

What has been faid before of the comparative -difference of time in
the feveral modes, is only meant to apply when no terms of direction
are given ; when fuch terms occur, each mode muft be varied ftriclly
according to their meaning.

Of Accent.

Accent is chiefly intended for the Compofer, and is defigned to fheTV
which parts of the bar are beft adapted for emphatical words : And
if words are well fet, the mufic will feldom fail to be properly accen-
ted. In Common Time, the firft and third parts are emphatical ;
In Treble Time the firft part only ; and in Compound Time the
firft and fourth parts, &c. &c.

Of Syncope or Syncopation,

What is meant by the above terms will be eafier to be underftood
by the learner, from his inftruclor's performing fuch inflances of the
fame as may occur in the courfe of his practical leffons, than in any
other way ; any explanation, therefore, is deemed fupeifluou-,

Of the Keys in Mufi

/s in Muhc.

There are but two Keys in Mufic, viz. the Major Key, which is
cheerful, &c. and the Minor Key, which is mournful, &c. When the
Keynote (which is confidercd to be the laft in the .bafs) is the note
next above the Mi, the mufic is in the Major Key. When the laft
aote in the bafs is the note next below the Mi, the mufic is in the Mi-
nor Key ; The reafon of whkh is, that in the former cafe, a third

from the Key note will be a greater third, in
lefs third. EXAMPLES.
